I love a yummy scent. In fact, I feel like I could really indulge in massive quantities of essential oils if left unchecked!I also really love the idea that essential oils can be used medicinally, like the way that lavender is always recommended for helping with relaxation and sleeping. The thing is, though, is that I used to be able to wear perfume when I was younger. But, I gradually became pretty much intolerant of colognes and perfumes over time…as in I get an immediate and pretty intense headache when I’m trapped in an elevator or closed space too long with someone drenched in their favorite scent. I will even get nauseous if I’m around the smell for more than a few minutes. It’s kind of strange and sometimes I feel a little self conscious about admitting to my friends that I need to get away from someone because of their perfume. Am I overly sensitive or something?
Well, I actually have done some research on the subject and it turns out that the chemicals in colognes and perfumes are kind of nasty. Some of the ingredients are considered respiratory irritants, especially for asthmatics. And, the same chemicals that make me want to throw up can also cause inflammation and swelling in lung tissue. Yuck! Anyway, aside from being an elaborate justification for my need to avoid these strong smells, it also explains why I love essential oils. I mean, I do enjoy smelling nice, minus the headache, and essential oils are delicious and subtly yummy.A lot of essential oils come pre-mixed in carrier oils like jojoba and coconut oil that are really nourishing for the skin so you get the best of best worlds…a pleasing scent and a moisturizing oil.
You do still have to scrutinize your labels, though because I’ve seen some big chain stores advertise essential oil fragrances and then when you read the ingredient list, they’ve slipped in some of the nasty chemicals, no doubt to save money with cheap ingredients. Some health food stores typically have a nice selection of authentic oils in their body care section and they can be a little pricey. But, you have to remember that they are concentrated and go a long way and, ultimately, they still end up being cheaper than fancy department store perfumes.
Some of the ones I love are:
Melanie’s Magical Mermaid Mist (This is a spray that only has one scent for purchase. But it’s delicious!)
There are plenty of other good brands out there, I am sure. But, the one’s I’ve listed are the brands I’ve used and really enjoyed. Essential oils are so much healthier for you and for anyone around you with asthma or particular scent sensitivities. They smell amazing and are subtle, not in your face power scents that knock people over! Give them a try…essential oils are another natural and amazing way to take care of your skin for a beautiful glow without chemicals leaching into your body. You simply do not need the nasty ingredients in your skin care and fragrance!
